Sport Opportunity successes for 2008

Custom Fleet is proud to have been a sponsor of the Halberg Trust Sport Opportunity Programme for over 13 years, providing vehicles for some of the Programme’s Sporting Advisors around New Zealand.

During this time we have seen some exceptional achievements both by the Trust and by those assisted through the Sport Opportunity Programme. Following are of some of the youngsters assisted by the Programme this year:

  • An 8 year old from the North Shore has been enjoying outings with his adventurous family in his customised stroller.
  • A Palmerston North wheelchair dependent boy received an Activity Fund grant so he could join in all the activities at his Scout Jamboree in Christchurch including: abseiling, sailing, sea ‘biscuiting’ and making crafts.
  • A Dunedin lad has been learning to swim at his local pool with some real benefits to his health and to his self esteem.
  • A young lady suffering from dyslexia has received support to attend skating lessons, providing a real boost to her confidence and a real sense of achievement when most of her days are filled with “Not Achieveds” at school.
  • An Aspergers Syndrome sufferer has been given funding for a trampoline, which provides a great outlet when he gets a bit “overloaded”.

Custom Fleet would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Halberg Trust Founder, Sir Murray Halberg, on receiving New Zealand’s highest honour in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours. Sir Murray has been recognised not just for his service to sport but also to the wider community as the newest addition to the Order of New Zealand, which is limited to 20 living people at any one time.

Sir Murray has also been awarded the Blake Medal for leadership - the fourth recipient of this honour. The Blake Medal is awarded to acknowledge and celebrate one outstanding New Zealand leader every year, with independent nominations for the award invited from all sectors of society.
